Things to look out for
Below are risk factors for family violence. If you notice one or more of these risk factors, it doesn't mean that there is family violence, but it does indicate that the family is at a higher risk and that you should regularly check-in about family violence.
- Lower economic resources
- Stress
- Social isolation
- Unemployment
- Relationship conflict and instability - divorce or separations
- Psychological abuse (including verbal abuse and controlling behaviors such as limiting the people that a family member is allowed to see)
- History of abuse
- Heavy alcohol and drug use
The following are risk factors for death due to domestic violence: choking, increasing aggression over time, access to weapons
